Dead.

His father. Dead.

Will shook his head. Not his father—Lord Colton wasn’t his father any longer, hadn’t been for two years. Had never been, actually. But still, that’s what he’d always called him. It didn’t matter now.

Lord Colton had been dead for a week and he should have felt relieved, knowing all the secrets that had gone with him. Only he found the old man’s death to be anything but a comfort.

“Oh, Mr. Colton,” Mrs. Bankert, the housekeeper, walked through the door of the kitchens. “You shouldn’t be in here. Why don’t you go sit in the drawing room and I’ll bring you a proper cup of tea.

Will held up his tin mug, currently filled with something entirely different than tea. “I’m quite all right where I am. You don’t need to be running around and making a fuss over things just for me. I’ve been joining the staff back here in the kitchen for meals for as long as I can remember. But, if you must do something, I’d greatly appreciate it if you’d simply pull up a stool and join me.”

The older woman smiled, her round cheeks blushing with ruddy happiness. “Oh, William.” She sat her stout frame on the seat next to him and refilled his cup from the decanter on the table. “I’m glad you came to visit today. I’ve missed having you here, we all have. That new mistress, she’s not as respectful of the staff as you’ve always been.”

He patted her hand affectionately. “I’ve missed all of you, too.” He meant it. It had been a long two years away from them. He’d always thought of the staff, especially Mrs. Bankert, as family, and wasn’t at all surprised that his stepmother hadn’t. Will would have visited sooner, but he’d waited until Lady Colton had left for the afternoon. Colton Manor was his now, but the Lady of the house wasn’t at all ready to vacate the premises. Rather than press the issue while his innocence was still up for debate, he’d waited until she left to visit her mother before stopping in to see Mrs. Bankert.
